Our Generation. A film by Sinem Saban & Damien Curtis. 2010. http://www.ourgeneration.org.au
Our Generation documents the situation in northern Australia following the 2007 implementation of government policies under the Northern Territory Emergency Response, which were geared toward the prevention of sexual abuse in Indigenous communities. The result of this Emergency Response was the removal of Indigenous human rights as documented in a 2007 United Nations report (below). Our Generation was released after the United Nations commented on the violation of human rights in March 2010. The documentary shows the history of the intervention and the underlying issues affecting Indigenous communities as well as provides a space for the Indigenous peoples and other key voices to share ways in which to move forward. The documentary is part of a movement of the Indigenous peoples of the Northern Australian Territory in their fight for freedom and self-determination which is further supported by their campaign to “Stop the Intervention”. James Anaya, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people, published his report, Observations on the Northern Territory Emergency Response in Australia, in February 2010 with regard to the Northern Territory Emergency Response. His report provides background information, how the intervention violates human rights as well as recommendations.
